Radford to Meet Fourth-Seeded UNC Asheville on Semifinal Thursday

RADFORD, Va. --
Fresh off its 82-58 quarterfinal victory over High Point, top-seeded Radford will battle UNCA Thursday in the semifinals of the 2009 Big South Men's Basketball Tournament at the Dedmon Center. The game is scheduled to tip at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.

Thursday's first semifinal matchup at 6 p.m. will feature No. 2 VMI and No. 3 Liberty.

HIGHLANDER HITS
- Radford has won 15 of its last 17 contests and enters its first semifinals since 2003 with a 19-11 record.
- Thanks to their fourth regular season crown in school history, the Highlanders will have home court throughout the conference tournament.
- Radford is attempting to win its second league tournament title since joining the Big South in 1985-86.
- The Highlanders' lone tournament championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament came 11 years ago (1997-98).
- Radford is the first team in league history to win the regular season after finishing seventh the previous campaign.
- The last time Radford recorded a 20-win season was the 1998-99 campaign. The Highlanders have won 20 games or more six times in the program's 35 years.
- The Highlanders finished the league slate with nine road wins, which also set a new school and Big South standard. As of March 1, Radford's nine straight triumphs away from home is tied (UConn) for the longest streak in the nation.
- On Monday, junior Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) was named the 2008-09 Big South Player of the Year. Joining Parakhouski on the first team was Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), while head coach Brad Greenberg was voted Coach of the Year.
- Parakhouski joins Jason Williams (1999-2000) as the only players in Radford history to earn Player of the Year honors.
- Parakhouski is 10th nationally in rebounds per game and ranks among Big South leaders in the following categories: scoring (6th/16.3), rebounding (2nd/10.9), field-goal percentage (2nd/.553), free-throw percentage (10th/.667), blocked shots (5th/1.33), defensive rebounds (2nd/7.2) and offensive rebounds (2nd/3.7). - Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) and Lynch-Flohr are also pouring in more than 10 points per outing with averages of 14.1 and 13.6, respectively.
- As a team, Radford ranks among the league's top three in the following categories: scoring offense (3rd/74.4), scoring margin (3rd/+4.7), field-goal percentage (1st/.464), field-goal percentage defense (1st/.397), three-point field goal percentage defense (1st/.322), rebounding margin (1st/+6.3), blocked shots (2nd/4.2) and defensive rebounds (1st/28.6).
- Fourth-seeded UNC Asheville (15-15) defeated Winthrop Tuesday evening in Asheville, N.C., to advance to the semifinals for the third straight year. Radford won both the regular season meetings against the Bulldogs. The first required overtime and the most recent was decided on Amir Johnson's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) last-second layup.
- Since going to the current Big South Tournament format, Radford has never hosted the semifinals.
- By virtue of winning the regular season, the Highlanders are guaranteed a postseason NIT berth.

QUARTERFINAL RECAP
- Amir Johnson just missed a triple-double and Radford placed four in double figures to cruise by No. 8 High Point 82-58 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Advance Auto Parts Men's Basketball Championship Tuesday evening at the Dedmon Center.
- Johnson finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for his third double-double of the season and sixth of his career. Art Parakhouski, the 2008-09 Big South Player of the Year, led all players with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Kenny Thomas recorded 19 points and Joey Lynch-Flohr added 12 for the Highlanders.
- Eugene Harris and David Singleton were the only Panthers in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
- Trailing 45-32 at the break, High Point scored the first five points of the second half, but Radford responded with a 16-2 run to stretch the margin to 20, where it would stay the rest of the way.
- A Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va./Norview) three-pointer with 3:35 remaining gave the Highlanders their largest lead of the night, 81-49.
- Radford, which shot 51.5 percent in the opening period, raced out to a 22-7 advantage highlighted by 10 early points from Parakhouski. High Point answered with a 12-4 streak of its own to cut the deficit to seven on a Jourdan Morris trey, but the Highlanders extended the lead back to double digits at the half.
- The Highlanders knocked down 50 percent of their attempts, including a 19-of-25 (76 percent) showing from the charity stripe. After shooting better than 45 percent in the first 20 minutes of action, High Point shot just 31.4 percent after intermission to finish with a clip of 38.1 percent.
- Radford grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and controlled the glass, 46-26.
