RADFORD, Va. – Freshman shortstop Jeff Kemp (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit a walk-off grand slam in game 1, and Radford blasted five long balls in game 2 to sweep a doubleheader from Canisius, 6-3 and 26-1 (7 innings) at Radford University Baseball Field on Saturday.
The wins improve the Highlanders to 3-5, while the Golden Griffins drop to 2-5.
Kemp took the decisive swing when Radford trailed 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, launching the first homer of his collegiate career over the right field fence, lifting Radford to its second win of the year.
In the nightcap, Radford jumped on Canisius when three of its first five home runs came in the first two innings, staking the Highlanders to an 18-1 lead. Kemp hit his second of the day, a three-run swing, batting around with two outs in the bottom of the first.
Kemp finished the day with seven RBI, going 4-of-6 at the plate.
Junior designated hitter Raphael Turner (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) started off the nine-run first with his two-out three run blast to right.
The Highlanders scored all nine of the runs in that inning unearned.
Turner finished game 2 with five RBI, and a team-best eight for the day.
Senior Mario Duarte (Tampa, Fla./Gaither), who hit a third-inning three-run long ball, cleared the bases in the second with his double to right field.
Duarte went 5-for-5 in game 2 with six driven in.
Junior center fielder Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) added five RBI in the second game, including a second-inning grand slam that cleared the right field fence.
In the nightcap, junior right-hander Aerik Taylor (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) earned the win (1-2), scattering seven hits over six innings and striking out five.
The Highlanders and Golden Griffins return to the field Sunday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
