BLACKSBURG, Va. – Left fielder Pat O'Connor drove in three runs, including two in the decisive fifth inning, to lift Bryant to a 5-4 win over Radford in non-conference baseball on Monday night at English Field.
O'Connor stroked a one-out double into the left center field alley in the top of the fifth to put the Bulldogs (5-2) ahead 5-2, and give Bryant the insurance it needed the rest of the way.
The Highlanders (4-6) added runs in the sixth and ninth innings, and junior center fielder
Tyren Rivers' (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) home run to lead off the final frame cut the lead to 5-4.
Left-hander Mark Andrews retired the next three Radford hitters to nail down the win for the Bulldogs and earn the save (1).
O'Connor finished the evening 1-of-3 with three RBI, driving home another on a ground out in the third to give Bryant a 2-1 lead.
Senior left fielder
Mario Duarte (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) led Radford at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.
Duarte's fourth-inning triple to the right center field gap brought home senior third baseman
Nick Minter (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem), and cut Bryant's lead to 3-2.
Right-hander Tom Baker earned the win (1-0), scattering six hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Radford redshirt freshman
Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) took the loss in his first collegiate start (0-1), allowing six hits and three earned runs over 4 1/3 frames.
Rivers' ninth-inning homer gave him two for the campaign, exceeding his previous season-best output.
Radford returns home for a 3 p.m. first pitch against New River Valley rival Virginia Tech on Tuesday.
