JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – East Tennessee State scored 13 unanswered runs between the third and eighth innings and got five RBI from shortstop Garrett May in a 13-11 non-conference win over Radford at Cardinal Park Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers (20-19) snapped a five game winning streak for the Highlanders (19-15), rallying from down 6-0 in the third inning and going out in front with a four-run fifth.
May was 3-for-4 with five driven in to lead ETSU. His two-out double with the bases loaded in the fifth cleared the bags and gave the Buccaneers a 9-6 lead. May added a run-scoring single with two down in the fourth that brought ETSU within one at 6-5.
Radford got offensive help from a pair of homers, including a three-run blast with two outs in the third from junior catcher
Robert Lamas (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) that made it 6-0. Freshman designated hitter
Matt Hillsinger (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) socked a two-run shot, the first of his collegiate career, with two gone in the ninth to cut ETSU's deficit to a pair at 13-11.
Lamas went 2-for-4, walked and scored twice, and Hillsinger finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Junior right fielder
Reggie Keen (Danville, Va./G.W.-Danville) added a 3-for-5 performance and recorded a pair of assists from the outfield in addition to his work at the plate.
ETSU got a three-run homer of its own, from third baseman Bo Reeder in the third, putting the Bucs on the board and beginning the string of 13 unanswered runs.
First baseman Paul Hoilman was 3-for-4 and scored twice, and catcher Derek Trent went 3-for-5 in addition to May's three-hit evening. Center fielder Jacob Fabry added a 2-for-4 night and scored three times.
Right-hander Ben Andrews led a group of seven Buccaneer pitchers with 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win (2-3). Andrews, who lasted just two-thirds of an inning in a start against the Highlanders on April 8, made the 13 unanswered runs stand with scoreless middle relief.
Senior righty
Josh Hammonds (Herndon, Va./Herndon) took the loss for Radford (2-1), allowing eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Radford continues a six-game road trip Friday, beginning a Big South series at Charleston Southern.
