CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern limited Radford to three runs in 18 innings, sweeping a Big South baseball doubleheader by scores of 7-2 and 6-1 on Saturday at Buccaneer Ballpark.
With the losses, Radford drops to 20-17 on the season with an 11-8 league mark. Charleston Southern improves to 15-29 overall and 10-12 in the conference.
The Buccaneers allowed just one earned run and 14 hits over the two games. First baseman Nick Chinners led the way at the plate by going 5-for-7 with three driven in, including home runs in his first and final plate appearances of the day.
Freshman shortstop
Jeff Kemp (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had three hits over the two games and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Highlanders.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 7, RADFORD 2
Center fielder Tom Burkett and Chinners had two hits each, and Chinners and third baseman Kory Morian drove in a pair, while the pitching staff surrendered no earned runs in a game one win for the Buccaneers.
Left-hander Charlie McCready went a season-best 5 1/3 innings to get the win (1-4) after giving up just the two runs, both of which were unearned. Right-handed reliever Keith Hustedt finished the game, with 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to get the save (3).
Sophomore right-hander
Shane Pysh (Wheeling, W.Va./John Marshall) went a career-long 7 1/3 innings, striking out a career-best 10.
Charleston Southern loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and a two-run single by third baseman Kory Morian with two outs put CSU up 2-0.
After giving up two runs on a home run by Kemp in the third to tie the game, Chinners got them back with another two-out hit, launching a homer to left field to give CSU the lead back at 4-2.
Charleston Southern added three insurance runs in the eighth inning, including two more with two outs. The rally started with a double by Chinners, who later scored on a pinch-hit double by Brantley Meier. Shortstop Mark Perry pounded out the third double of the inning to score Meier and Morian to give the Buccaneers the7-2 advantage.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 6, RADFORD 1
Right-hander Jesse Cadenhead allowed one run over 8 1/3 innings, and Chinners added a 3-for-4 effort with another homer to lift the Buccaneers to a game two win.
Cadenhead was just shy of his second complete game of the season, pitching 8 1/3 innings, giving up six hits while striking out four to earn the win (4-3).
Redshirt freshman righty
Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) took the loss for the Highlanders (1-4), but struck out six in 5 1/3 innings.
Charleston Southern again took an early lead in game two when catcher Blake Hunt scored from second on a two-out RBI single by Meier.
In the fourth, the Buccaneers went ahead 2-0 on a hit-and-run by Chinners, putting right fielder Tyler Thornburg on third. Morian brought Thornburg in on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Radford cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth, stringing together three-straight singles, capped by an RBI single from freshman catcher
Carl Travers (Huntingtown, Md./Riverdale Baptist) to plate a run.
Perry got the run back on his third home run of the season, pushing the Buccaneer lead to 3-1. Another homer, this time a two-run shot from Morian in the sixth, gave Charleston Southern breathing room at 5-1.
Chinners added an insurance run with a homer of his own in the bottom of the eighth, extending the Buccaneers' lead to 6-1, and Thornburg was able to close out the game, pitching a scoreless ninth to seal the victory and the sweep for Charleston Southern.
