BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Olga Ekblom scored the game's only goal and Campbell picked up a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Radford Monday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Campbell (5-4), which won its second-straight game, is off to its best start since 2005. Radford (3-6) lost its fourth in a row.
The Camels went in front in the 10th minute on Olga Ekblom's fourth goal of the season.
For the Highlanders, sophomore goalkeeper
Lisa Lubke (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) made seven saves in the loss. Her biggest of the night came in the final minute of the opening period, when Ekblom hit the bar from a shot at the six-yard box. The rebound fell to Hanna Salmen, whose shot was on target, but Lubke's reaction save kept the Radford deficit at one.
On Ekblom's goal, Ashley Wagner's in-swinging corner kick was cleared by the Radford defense, but only to the top of the box, where Ekblom struck a right-footed shot that caromed off the crossbar, then deflected off Lubke into the net.
Radford's best chance of the half came in the 17th minute when a long pass skimmed off the head of Camel defender Anna Lindblad. Junior
Latrice Lee (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) raced behind the CU back line, but her shot against charging Camel keeper Jamie Panfil was well wide of the right post.
In the 46th minute, senior
Justine Dugger (Purcellville, Va./Notre Dame Academy) ran on to a pass beyond the Camel back line, but Panfil charged off her line and touched the attempt away for a corner kick. About six minutes later, junior
Kathleen Jarvis (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) split the defense with a pass to Lee, but Panfil again came off her line for a point-blank save that preserved Campbell's lead.
