RADFORD – The Radford women's soccer team took care of business on their home pitch in week one, and can do the same in week two with a pair of weekend games at Cupp Stadium.
The Highlanders open the month of September by welcoming East Tennessee State for a Friday night tilt (7 p.m.) and Marshall in a Sunday matinee (2 p.m.).
In the first two matches of the 2009 regular season, the defending Big South Champions opened a five-game homestand in winning fashion with victories over Howard (Aug. 28, 2-1) and Tennessee Tech (Aug. 30, 1-0). With the two season-opening wins, the Highlanders made it seven victories in their last 11 home games, where they went 5-1-3 last season.
Against an attacking Howard squad, the Highlanders weathered a first half penalty kick attempt by the Bison and scored late in the first half and early in the second to win the season opener.
Last Friday night also marked a pair of firsts, as senior
Amanda Heins and junior
Jourdan McDaniel netted their first career goals. Heins, the Big South player of the week, closed out the first half with her tally off a corner kick to give Radford a 1-0 advantage over Howard. McDaniel added the game-winner, after coming off the bench to start the period and putting the first four shots of the half on frame.

On Sunday, Tennessee Tech limited Radford offensively and it wasn't until
Melony Davis's 82nd minute goal that the Highlanders had a quality scoring chance.  For Davis, her goal came on her first touch of the game after entering in the 79th minute.

East Tennessee State is a familiar non-conference foe for the Highlanders, who met the Buccaneers previously in 11 straight seasons before a series hiatus in 2008. Radford is 5-4-2 all-time against ETSU, which is winless in its first three outings of the year.
Marshall returns a home game to the Highlanders, who visited Huntington, W.Va. last season in the four-team Thundering Herd Invitational. Radford and Marshall tied 2-2 last season. It's a Big South weekend for the Herd, who will try to stay unbeaten with games at Winthrop (Friday) and Cupp Stadium on Sunday.
NOTES: Sophomore goalkeeper
Lisa Lubke, the Big South Preseason Player of the Year, earned her seventh career shutout to move into seventh-place all-time at Radford in the category… Head coach
Ben Sohrabi needs four more wins for 150 in his collegiate coaching career following last weekend's sweep…  his last milestone, No. 125 at Radford, came when the Highlanders won the 2008 Big South Championship game last November… The Highlanders close out their homestand Tuesday (Sept. 8) against Concord at 6 p.m., an atypical start time for Cupp Stadium home matches.
