RADFORD – If Radford's second half looked like its first half Sunday against Marshall, the result might have been different for the Highlanders on Sunday afternoon.
A pair of second half goals, including a tally 1:43 into the period, lifted the Thundering Herd to a 2-0 win over Radford in non-conference women's soccer at a rainy Cupp Stadium.
“That first half showed the level we were capable of playing at,” head coach
Ben Sohrabi said after the game. “We lost some steam in the second half, and Marshall did a good job of possessing the ball and making their chances count.”
Marshall (5-0-0) cashed in out of the locker room in the 47th minute when Angela DeSumma, who was forced to the far side corner, floated a cross into the box that Molly Snead finished to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.
In the 63rd minute, DeSumma's corner kick from the far side set up Sarah Vinson, who collected the ball through traffic and fired a shot inside the near post to put the Herd up 2-0.
Sunday's match was different out of the gate for Radford (2-2-0). The Highlanders were sluggish after the first whistle on Friday night in a loss to East Tennessee State, and fell behind early as a result, but this time controlled play for the opening 20 minutes.
“I thought they were ready to play today,” Sohrabi said. “After what happened Friday, they were ready for the first 20 minutes, and the last 20 minutes were pretty even as well, but we needed to take advantage of opportunities when we had them.”
One of those opportunities came in the 12th minute when senior
Jackie Cozza's (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) shot from just inside the penalty box rang the crossbar, and sophomore
Melony Davis's (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) rebound try sailed over the net.
Later in the half, Marshall nearly added its first. Erika Duncan got free outside the goal box on a near side break, but sophomore
Lisa Lubke's (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis De Sales) play on Duncan at the 12 yard mark forced a tough shot right at her and kept the game scoreless before halftime.
The Highlanders close a five-game homestand Tuesday night, hosting Concord at 6 p.m.
