ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer team used goals from freshman Julie Ruh'e and sophomore
Mary Wiley to push its season-best winning streak to three games with a 2-0 win over UNC Asheville in their league-opener Friday evening.
Win the victory, Radford improves to 7-4-0 (1-0-0 BSC) on the season, while UNC Asheville falls to 1-8-0 (0-1-0 BSC).
Ruh'e netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 35th minute on a breakaway pass from freshman
Sydney Golden. Ruh'e took the ball and connected on a shot from 10 yards out to give the Highlanders a 1-0 advantage.
Wiley would tack on the insurance goal eight minutes into the second half. Wiley received a chain of passes from Che' Brown and junior
Maryellen Derenda that led to a breakaway. Brown sent a long pass to Derenda, who dished it to Wiley. Wiley then converted her second goal of the season.
“I was happy with the result today,” said head coach
Ben Sohrabi. “I've always felt UNC Asheville was a tough road game so it's good to start league play with a win.”
The assist marked the second-straight match Derenda has tallied a helper and for Brown, it was her first career assist.
For Radford, Brown recorded her fifth shutout of the season, stopping five shots in the match. UNC Asheville keeper Megan Dent had four saves.
The Highlanders held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-5, and in shots 12-10.
Radford will conclude its season-long four-game road swing when it faces Presbyterian on Sunday at 1 p.m.
