VIDEO: VASQUEZ, AFLAKI LEAD WOMEN'S SOCCER PAST COASTAL, 2-0

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. - Led by freshman Sahar Aflaki's (Gainesville, Va. / Battlefield) insurance goal and assist on Krissia Vasquez's (Bowie, Md. / St. John's College High) game-winner, Radford women's soccer defeated Coastal Carolina, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

The win moves the Highlanders to 9-4-1 (3-0-1 BSC) and extends their unbeaten streak to six games. The loss for the Chanticleers drops them to 6-7-0 (2-2-0 BSC) on the season.

A 66th minute farside cross in the box from Aflaki to a wide-open Krissia Vasquez (Bowie, Md. / St. John's College High) put Radford on the scoreboard first. Vasquez took advantage of the pass and buried it in the lower left net. The goal was the fourth of the season for Vasquez.

“Today was a battle,” said Vasquez. “On the goal, Sahar made a great run down the end line and I was there to finish and help us out.”

Aflaki came right back in the 89th minute off a pass from freshman Tyler Drake (Palmyra, Va. / Fluvanna County), rolling the ball past the diving Chanticleer keeper Jessica Barton, to make sure Coastal wouldn't have a chance for a late comeback bid.

“This game was all about mental toughness and heart,” said Aflaki. “I was just glad I was able to step up for us and give us a shot. I found Krissia wide open and we pulled out the win.”

“We played a lot of players today and all the ones that came in did a great job,” said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "It was really nice to see Sahar step up today and get a goal for us.”

Radford keeper Che' Brown (Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park) kept the Chanticleers off the scoreboard by making six saves en route to recording her sixth shutout of the season.

The Highlanders recorded nine shots in each half and held the advantage 18-13 for the game.

In the eighth minute, the Chanticleers' leading scorer Anna Tupy blasted a shot from the edge of the box, but it was directed straight to Brown for the save. Tupy took seven of Coastal Carolina's 13 total shots in the match.
