RUTV: JOHNSTON’S GAME-WINNER PUSHES RU PAST HIGH POINT 1-0

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. –
For the second consecutive game, freshman Kathryn Johnston converted the game-winning tally as Radford edged High Point 1-0 Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action.

The goal was setup on a throw in from freshman Tyler Drake and a header flick from senior Kathleen Jarvis to Johnston in the 30th minute.  She one-touched from the edge of the 18-yard box and fired a shot past High Point's keeper, which proved to be the difference in the match.

“The ball deflected off a girl and I took a touch around her because she still had a chance to clear it if I stayed there,” said Johnston. “I hit it solid to the far post and it went right in the back of the net.”

“KJ has really stepped up this weekend and I could really tell in training,” said head coach Ben Sohrabi. “How you train is how you're going to play in the games and I'm really happy for her.”

The name of the game was possession in the second half, as the ball was played in the midfield for the majority of the frame.

The Highlander defense came up big again, jumping in front of every High Point pass and regaining possession on numerous occasions.

“Our backs did a great job defending and getting two shutouts this weekend, but it was a good team defensive effort and that's what it takes this time of year.”

High Point's (6-10-1, 4-2-1 BSC) Brielle Spencer had a last-second effort when her shot fell into the arms of freshman keeper Che' Brown.

Brown made two incredible saves early in the first half. A lob by Katie Taber in the 16th minute looked as if it were going under the crossbar, but Brown punched the ball over to keep the game scoreless.

Five minutes later in the 21st, the Panthers' Sara Rager blasted a hard shot from five yards out, but Brown stopped her line drive kick at the nearside post. She finished with six saves in the game.

For the fifth straight match, Radford outshot their opponent and held a 10-8 advantage on High Point.

The regular season finale will come on Friday, October 29 when the Highlanders host VMI on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
