BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Despite Radford holding a commanding advantage in shots (19-8), including six attempts in the second overtime, the Highlanders and Coastal Carolina played to a 1-1 tie in Big South men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.
“This was a great college game against a very good Coastal side,” said Radford head coach Marc Reeves.
Radford (6-5-3, 4-2-1 Big South) had three outstanding looks at golden goals in the second extra session. Both Anthony Payne (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) and Aldo Macias (Dumfries, Va./Edison) hit the woodwork in the 108th minute, while Coastal Carolina keeper Scott Angevine made an unbelievable kick save from his backside on a low drive from Brendan Shaffer (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) with 2:07 remaining.
“We played well in the second half and created some excellent chances that on another day will hopefully go in.”
Leo Mukofsky put Coastal Carolina (9-6-2, 5-2-1) on the board in the 29th minute when he found the back of the net with a header off a long throw in from Robbie Joe Daniels.
Despite trailing at the break, the Highlanders held a 5-4 edge in shots, including a pair of great scoring chances late in the first half.
Radford's best opportunity in the opening period came with just under eight minutes to go when Mike Handlin (Opal, Va./Liberty-Bealeton) got free in the box and just missed high with a right-footed strike.
Camden Brown (Knoxville, Tenn./Karns) and Ryan Stinnett (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) also had good looks for the Highlanders in the first 45 minutes of action.
In the 56th minute, Radford's Bernardo Ulmo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent) tried to bend a free kick around the wall from just outside the 18-yard box, but Angevie made a solid save the his left.
The Highlanders tied the game, 1-1, in the 60th minute on an own goal. The equalizer came when Iyiola Awosika's (London, England/Aylesbury Grammar) cross from the far side to the cutting Ulmo was cleared into the net by a sliding Coastal defender.
Ulmo had another terrific chance to put the game away in regulation, but his shot off an Awosika feed caromed off the left post with 6:53 remaining.
The Highlanders finish their 2010 home slate 4-0-1, while outscoring the opposition by a combined margin of 13-2.
“It's a shame we couldn't get another home win for our seniors. However, to go undefeated at home this season is something they should be proud of,” Reeves said.
Radford will conclude its regular season with three road contests beginning with a 7 p.m. match at New River rival Virginia Tech Monday evening. The Chanticleers travel to College Park, Md., to meet No. 3 Maryland Nov. 5.
