MEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT NO. 2 NORTH CAROLINA

BOX SCORE

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
Despite grabbing the early 1-0 advantage on Iyiola Awosika's (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) first-half goal, Radford fell to No. 2 North Carolina, 5-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Fetzer Field.

“North Carolina is No. 2 in the nation for a reason,” said Radford head coach Marc Reeves. “They are extremely talented and play great soccer.”

The setback ends the Highlanders' longest unbeaten streak (five games) since the 1995 season as they fall to 4-3-2 overall, while UNC improves to 7-2-0.

Awosika's 26th minute strike came when he chased down a loose ball, evaded the Tar Heel keeper and put away the game's first goal in an empty net. Aldo Macias (Dumfries, Va. / Edison) recorded his first assist of the season on Awosika's team-leading fourth goal of 2010.

“We did well in the first half, but you must play a complete focused game to get anything from an opponent of their caliber.”

Prior to intermission, Martin Murphy provided the nationally-ranked Tar Heels with a 39th minute equalizer, which was also his first of two scores on the night.

Murphy's second goal of the evening and year came in the closing minutes.

North Carolina grabbed the lead for good just under five minutes into the second half on Enzo Martinez' fourth goal of the year. Josh Rice, who set up UNC's first goal of the game, also assisted on the eventual game-winner.

In addition to Murphy and Martinez, the Tar Heels also got second-half goals from Kirk Urso (63') and Matt Rose (80').

“We must learn from this experience and re-group for a very important conference game this weekend,” Reeves said.

The Highlanders look to remain unbeaten in league play as they travel to UNC Asheville for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday afternoon.
