VIDEO: RADFORD EXPLODES FOR FIVE SECOND-HALF GOALS IN WIN OVER PC

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. –
On a night that Radford's all-time leading scorer was on hand, the Highlanders erupted for five second-half goals on their way to a convincing 5-1 victory over Presbyterian in Big South men's soccer action Saturday evening in front of 1,402 fans at Cupp Stadium.

“Tonight was a great performance by our team, especially in the second half,” said Highlander head coach Marc Reeves.

In the midst of their longest unbeaten streak since the 1995 season, Radford improves to 4-2-2 overall and is alone atop the league standings at 2-0-0.

At intermission, Dante Washington, Radford and the Conference's all-time leading scorer, was honored, as a banner was unveiled representing his storybook career, which will now be a permanent fixture at Cupp.

“We'd like to certainly thank Dante, his wife Holly, the RU family weekend attendees and No. 9 club for their tremendous support and enthusiasm this evening.”

The Highlanders had a pair of great chances to score in the opening period, both shots by Brian Gwanzura (Harare, Zimbabwe / Harare). Seven minutes into the match, the 6-3 midfielder just missed a header wide off a corner, while the other attempt was just in front of goal, but blocked by a Presbyterian (1-6-1, 0-2-0) defender.

Radford got on the board in the 48th minute on beautifully executed header from Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos). Grande's first career strike came when Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) played the ball out to Ryan Stinnett (Woodbridge, Va. / Woodbridge), who found the cutting freshman.

The Highlanders extended their lead to 2-0 six minutes later on Bernardo Ulmo's (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) second penalty kick in as many home contests. The PK was a result of a handball.

Shortly after Ulmo's eventual game-winner, senior Camden Brown (Knoxville, Tenn. / Karns) ripped a shot just inside the 18-yard box for his first goal since the 2007 campaign. His second came in the 71st minute on a low drive to the far post.

Both Vitto Lauretano (Chester, Va. / Thomas Dale) and Anthony Payne (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) assisted on Brown's third career goal.

Presbyterian's lone score came from Lewis Makin at the 70:10 mark

Ian Aquino (Burke,Va. / Lake Braddock) also got into the scoring act for the Highlanders with a 72nd minute strike. The game's final goal came when Payne played the ball wide to the senior, who faked to create space, then cut it back and drilled a left footed shot for his first career goal.

“I'm really pleased for our two seniors,” said Reeves. “They have fantastic attitudes and were rewarded with goals in what was another terrific team and conference victory.”

The Highlanders finished with a commanding 22-13 advantage in shots. Both teams attempted seven corners.

Joey Dennis (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) recorded five saves for Radford, while Presbyterian's Andrew Wallingford had six.

Tonight's five goals are the most in a contest for the Highlanders since they defeated Coastal Carolina 5-2 on Oct. 7, 2006.

Radford returns to action Tuesday evening in a 7 p.m. contest at No. 2 North Carolina. The Blue Hose will also be back on the pitch Oct. 5 when they host UNC Asheville.
