BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Radford concluded its regular season with a 4-1 setback at Gardner-Webb in Big South men's soccer action Friday evening at Greene-Harbison Field.
“Gardner-Webb is a well coached, spirited team that wanted to win more than our guys tonight,” commented Radford head coach
Marc Reeves. “The first half was pretty even, but we did not compete hard enough or concentrate at key moments to have the ball bounce our way.”
The game's first goal came from the Bulldogs' Stephen Maxwell just over 26 minutes into the contest.
For the second time in as many outings, the Highlanders' lone goal came from
Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar). The junior's equalizer and team-leading ninth goal of the year came in the 29th minute.
Like Tuesday evening's contest at Elon, fellow forward
Camden Brown (Knoxville, Tenn. / Karns) set up Awosika's score.
Awosika attempted half of his club's shots, including three on goal.
With the contest tied 1-1 at the break, the Bulldogs' Chris Davis scored the eventual difference maker early in the second half.
Nicholas Wrobel, who assisted Davis' game-winner in the 54th minute, added a pair of goals of his own late in the contest to put the game out of reach.
Gardner-Webb (7-10-0, 5-3-0) finished with a 22-12 advantage in shots, forcing Highlander keeper
Joey Dennis (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) to make a game-high five saves.
Despite the loss, Radford (6-8-3, 4-3-1) held an 11-5 margin in corner kicks.
Radford will enjoy a much-needed six-day break before taking part in the 2010 Big South Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins Nov. 11 in High Point, N.C.
“We go into the conference tournament needing to prove we care more about the basics of the game and show we can play with greater pride,” Reeves said.
The Highlanders will learn their seeding and opponent later this weekend.
