BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Despite outshooting the Runnin' Bulldogs 21-13 and outstanding goalkeeping from freshman Che' Brown, Radford's season ended with a 1-0 setback in the quarterfinals of the Big South Women's Soccer Tournament Friday night.
Gardner-Webb improves to 7-9-4 on the year, while Radford concludes 2010 12-7-1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' Stephanie Benshoof collected the ball inside the 18-yard box and fired a strike on the far side to the near-side post and past a diving Brown to net the game's only score in the 78th minute.
The Highlanders had many opportunities in front of the net and in the six-yard box, but couldn't capitalize, as Gardner-Webb's defense held strong and cleared the ball out of harm's way.
Senior
Latrice Lee had several left-footed strikes, but each rolled just wide of the goal and the team's leading scorer Julie Ruh'e tallied five shots.
Brown made six saves, including two diving punch outs that prevented the Runnin' Bulldogs from two assured goals. Her counterpart, Chelsea Hearne, made 10 big saves for Gardner-Webb
“Tonight was very frustrating. The ball was bouncing around the six-yard box so many times and you just knew it was going in, but it never did,” commented head coach
Ben Sohrabi. “I give Gardner-Webb a lot of credit because they fought hard and stuck to their game plan, but I'm proud of our girls and especially our seniors.”
