College of Charleston Finishes Sweep of Baseball with 11-3 Sunday Win

BOX SCORE

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston scored 11 runs on 13 hits, slugging their way to an 11-3 win over Radford and completing an opening weekend non-conference series sweep on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars (3-0) benefitted from a big early inning, plating four runs in the second after trailing Radford (0-3) early in the game.  College of Charleston scored a run in the fifth and six runs in the final two frames to finish off the sweep.

Cole Rakar led the Cougars with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, driving in a run during the decisive second inning with a two-out single that scored Baker Knox and Matt Leeds on the play.  Rakar came to the plate when Jesse Mesa reached on an error, giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead.

Rakar added another run-scoring hit in the seventh inning.

Raphael Turner (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) gave Radford an early 2-0 lead on his two out, two-run homer in the top of the first.

Brett Mollenhauer (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) was the only Highlander with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4.

Christian Powell, making his first collegiate start, tossed four scheduled innings in his start to pick up the win (1-0).  Righty Shane Pysh (Wheeling, W.Va./John Marshall), who allowed two earned runs on three hits in four innings, took the loss (0-1) for Radford.

Radford heads back to South Carolina next weekend for the Charleston Crab House Shootout, hosted by The Citadel.  The Highlanders are playing for the second straight year in the tournament, which begins Friday with a 1 p.m. meeting with Marshall.
