Weekly Report

RADFORD, Va. - Radford returns to South Carolina for its second weekend on the diamond when the Highlanders participate in the Charleston Crab House Shootout, hosted by The Citadel at Joseph P. Riley Park Friday through Sunday.

This season is the second in a row that Radford has participated in an early season tournament at The Citadel, playing in the Charleston Firefighter Memorial Challenge last year.  For the second year in a row, the Highlanders will meet both the Bulldogs and Marshall at Riley Park. Last year's tournament was rain-shortened, with Radford playing two Friday games.

All-time, Radford is 1-3 against The Citadel and 0-3 against Marshall. The Highlanders and St. Joseph's have never met in baseball competition.

Last weekend, Radford was swept in its season-opening series against high-octane College of Charleston, one of the country's most prolific offensive teams in recent years. On opening day last Friday, Radford rode six scoreless innings from right-hander Aerik Taylor, but couldn't hold a 3-2 lead late before falling 8-4 after a six-run Cougar eighth. College of Charleston finished the sweep with 9-1 and 11-3 wins.

The Highlanders were without their top returning hitter, shortstop Jeff Kemp, who was held out of the opening series with an injury.

The Citadel went 2-1 in its opening weekend with wins in the Memorial Challenge over East Tennessee State (4-1) and Delaware (8-7), and a loss to Kansas State (2-1). Marshall split a four-game series at Samford, winning two in a row to close out the set. St. Joseph's will be playing its first games of the season this weekend.

Riley Park is also the home of the Charleston RiverDogs, Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
