Marshall's Two-Out Eighth-Inning Run Nips Baseball, 3-2

BOX SCORE

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– An eighth-inning run with two outs broke a 2-2 tie and gave Marshall a 3-2 win over Radford in the first game of the Charleston Crab House Shootout on Friday afternoon at Joe Riley Park.

With two down and Marshall's Ben Jurevicius at third, Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) struck out Issac Ballou on a pitch in the dirt but the throw to first got away and rolled into right field, scoring Jurevicius and giving Marshall (3-2) the go-ahead run.

Rick Hoogstraten (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) singled to lead off the Radford (0-4) ninth, but Austin Coan retired the next three hitters to shut the door and pick up the save (2) for the Thundering Herd.

“We made some mistakes on the bases and made some serious defensive blunders towards the end of the game,” head coach Joe Raccuia said.  “When you're not playing with a lot of confidence, those mistakes can really bite you.”

The Highlanders couldn't find a way to break through, after rallying to score the tying runs in fifth inning.  Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) led off the frame with a home run over the left center field wall to cut Marshall's lead to 2-1 and Raphael Turner (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) singled home Brett Mollenhauer (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) to knot the game at 2-2.

Rivers and Turner were among seven Radford players to have hits.  Matt Mack (Davidsonville, Md./St. John's College H.S.) led the Highlanders with a 2-for-3 day, including a walk.

Marshall got its first runs of the day in the bottom of the fourth, on Kurt Lipton's solo blast inside the left field foul pole and on Kenny Socorro's RBI single up the middle with two outs.

Lipton was 3-for-4, and Jurevicius went 2-for-4, scoring twice.

Aerik Taylor (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) turned in his second quality start, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits over six innings.  Taylor struck out three, including two in the sixth to end a Marshall threat with Jurevicius at third with one out.

“Aerik was outstanding,” Raccuia said.  “Like he does all the time, he's a Friday guy who gives us a chance every game with a chance to win late.  That's what you want with a guy who throws in his spot, and he saves your bullpen.

“That's two games in a row where he's carried us into a spot where we can win it for him.  We need to do a better job of saving him.”

Marshall starter Ian Kadish struck out seven over five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.  Arik Sikula picked up the win (1-0) with three strikeouts in three innings of no-hit relief.

Derrick Brewer (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry-Ashland) had the loss for Radford (0-1), allowing two Marshall runners to reach in the eighth before giving way to Williams.

Radford plays its second game in the Charleston Crab House Shootout on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Saint Joseph's.
