RADFORD, Va. - Radford softball steps out of Big South play on Wednesday when it travels to Farmville, Va. for a mid-week doubleheader against in-state foe Longwood. The Highlanders (16-9) and Lancers (22-10) will square off at 3 p.m.
Be sure to check out this week's edition of
Softball Spotlight hosted by Patrick Reed. This week Reed chats with juniors
Kristen Shifflett and
Shannon Keefe.
Radford enters the twinbill having won three straight and 10 of 11 after sweeping a three-game series at home last weekend against Charleston Southern.
The Highlanders' offense played a big part in the sweep, totaling 30 runs on 38 hits, 25 of which went for extra bases. All nine starters recorded at least two hits, eight knocked in two or more runs and six hit home runs.
For the weekend, Radford batted .469 with 15 doubles, a triple and nine long balls, slugged 1.012 and recorded a .527 on base percentage. Defensively, they made only one error and finished with a .987 fielding percentage.
Shifflett, the reigning two-time Big South Player of the Week, was one of many offensive stars as she was 6-for-8 with three doubles, two round trippers, seven runs scored and five RBI against the Buccaneers.
Hope Creasy,
Meredith Moore,
Nichole Beall and
Michelle Beall all batted at a .500 clip or better with Keefe and
Taylor Cunningham at .455 and .444, respectively.
When Radford and Longwood collide, they will be meeting for the 21st and 22nd time. The Highlanders lead the series, 14-6 winning last year's contest, 10-4 on April 16 in Farmville.
Farmville is a familiar place for head coach
Mickey Dean. It was the last coaching destination before taking over the reigns of Radford in the fall of 2006. Dean spent 2005 and 2006 as an assistant and then associate head coach under Lancer 13-year head coach Kathy Riley.
After Wednesday's contests, Radford will return home for a three-game league series against Gardner-Webb on Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. with the series finale on Friday at 1 p.m.
