KELLEY TOSSES ONE-HIT SHUTOUT; SOFTBALL SWEEPS COASTAL CAROLINA


Game One l Game Two

CONWAY, S.C. – Chelsea Kelley twirled a one-hit shutout in game one and Radford hit a total of four home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Coastal Carolina, Saturday afternoon from CCU Softball Field.

The Highlanders (28-10, 13-1 Big South) extended their winning streak to 12 games with 6-0 and 9-1 victories.

With the game one victory, Mickey Dean won his 50th Big South game in just 62 contests.

In game one, Kelley (17-5) struck out a career-high nine and allowed just a two-out first inning single to Jazmin Daigle. Following the single, the junior retired the final 19 batters with only three balls leaving the infield. She struck out at least one batter in each inning, including the final out the game.

Hope Creasy, #Sarah Himan (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) and Meredith Moore left the yard for the Highlanders.

Lauren Williams scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the third to give Radford a 1-0 lead. The junior singled with one out, moved to third on a grounder and then scooted home with the first run of the game.

A solo blast to rightcenter by Creasy doubled Radford's lead to 2-0 in the fourth. The long ball was the 11th of the season and the 31st of her career, tying the all-time mark held by Melissa Pickel (1995-97, '99).

Michelle Beall tallied third run crossing the dish on a wild pitch in the fifth.

Two more home runs in the sixth, a two-run shot by Himan and a solo blast with two outs by Moore doubled the Highlanders' advantage to 6-0.

The Highlanders jumped on the Chanticleers for seven runs in the first two innings of game two. The outburst was highlighted by a five-run second.

In the second, Kristen Shifflett and Shannon Keefe recorded RBI doubles. The other three runs scored on a wild pitch and two throwing errors on first and third situations.

Nichole Beall started the scoring in the first when she tripled home Shifflett. Himan plated Beall with a sacrifice fly.

The Highlanders scored single runs in the third and fourth on a solo home run by Michelle Beall and a RBI double by Moore.

Shifflett, Keefe and Michelle Beall each had two hits for the Highlanders.

Kellie Snooks picked up the victory. She surrendered a run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Radford and Coastal Carolina will conclude the series tomorrow, April 18 at 1 p.m.
