By virtue of its two wins over Gardner-Webb this weekend, Radford sealed up the No. 3 spot and avoids playing in the single-elimination play-in round of the Big South Tournament, which begins on May 25 at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Highlanders own tiebreakers with both VMI and High Point, which are tied for fourth in the league standings and three games in back of third place. Radford is three games behind Liberty and can match the Flames' record, but Liberty owns the tiebreaker based on head-to-head record.
Radford will be the tournament's third seed for the first time since the 2000 season, and will play the No. 4 seed in the 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, May 26 at Winthrop.
With a pair of wins over the weekend, the Highlanders are 28-game winners for the fifth time in school history, and the first time since 2000. Radford needs one more Big South win to tie its mark of 16 from last year, which was the second-most single-season conference wins for the Highlanders. Radford hosts Coastal Carolina beginning Thursday – the Chanticleers were ranked No. 4 in both the ESPN/USA Today and Collegiate Baseball News polls last week.
Marshall, which has played nine Conference USA games in a row, hasn't had a midweek contest since April 28 at Ohio State. Despite going 3-6 over that stretch, the Herd sits fourth in the league standings at 12-12.
In the last meeting between Marshall and Radford on Feb. 26, an eighth-inning run with two outs broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Herd a 3-2 win in the Charleston Crab House Shootout. With two down and Marshall's Ben Jurevicius at third,
Abram Williams struck out Issac Ballou on a pitch in the dirt but the throw to first got away and rolled into right field, scoring Jurevicius and giving Marshall the go-ahead run.
Marshall is hitting .291 as a team with an ERA of 6.25. Kurt Lipton is batting .375 to lead the Herd, while Victor Gomez is hitting .374 with a team-best 16 home runs and 59 RBIs.
