BECKLEY, W.Va. – A seven-run second inning, along with three RBIs each from
Matt Hillsinger,
Matt Mack and
Andrew Cook, propelled Radford to a 15-5 win over Marshall on Tuesday afternoon.
The final midweek game of the season for the Highlanders (29-22) was held at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley due to unplayable field conditions at Marshall's on-campus facility in Huntington.
Radford sent 11 men to the plate in the big second inning, including seven hits, to grab a quick 9-1 lead on the Thundering Herd (23-29).
“Swinging the bats well, executing and running the bases well was key today,” head coach
Joe Raccuia said. “This was a good midweek win.”
In addition to his three RBIs, Mack went 3-for-4, scored three times and walked twice. Mack had a pair of triples – an RBI triple in the second with one out, and a seventh-inning triple where he came home on an error in center field.
Hillsinger's only hit was an RBI double in the second, a 1-for-3 day with a walk. He was hit by a pitch and scored twice.
Cook brought home a run in the second on a groundout, and hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, for his only hit of the game with two outs in the sixth inning.
Alex Guerra added a 3-for-5 day and
Cory Cook went 2-for-4, part of a Radford offense that banged out 14 hits.
Aerik Taylor, making a rare midweek start, went six innings to earn his sixth win of the season (6-1). Taylor struck out four, allowing four earned runs on nine hits.
“Today was a unique opportunity to throw our ace, and he gave us a good start to make the offense stand up early,” Raccuia said.
James Lavinskas went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead Marshall.
The Highlanders won for the first time in four series with the Herd, the most frequent non-conference series over the last two years for Radford.
Radford returns home to close out the 2010 regular season on Thursday, beginning a three-game Big South series with No. 4 Coastal Carolina.
“Going into the weekend, we have a lot of confidence,” Raccuia said. “We know what we're up against, and we'll be prepared for a quality opponent.”
