HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to Mercer on day one of the Flash Gordon Motors Invitational hosted by High Point Friday afternoon at Vert Stadium.
The Highlanders fall to 1-2-0 on the young season, while the Bears improve to 2-1-0.
Radford had a chance to put the first score on the board in the opening half, but
Iyiola Awosika's (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) open header sailed just high of net in the 24th minute.
In addition to Awosika's opportunity, the Highlanders began the second half in strong fashion, including shots from
Mike Handlin (Opal, Va. / Liberty-Bealeton) and
Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos), which were blocked by Bear defenders.
After Radford threatened early in the second half, Mercer scored three goals over a 20-minute span to put the game out of reach.
The Bears held a slim 11-10 edge in shots and a 7-0 margin in corner kicks.
Both keepers finished with two saves each.
The Highlanders will conclude the event with a 1 p.m. contest against Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon.
