MEN’S SOCCER CONCLUDES SEASON-OPENING ROAD SWING WITH 1-1 DRAW

BOX SCORE (Coming Soon)

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Despite finishing with a commanding 24-14 advantage in shots, including 14 on goal, Radford had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Georgia Southern on the final day of the Flash Gordon Motors Invitational Saturday afternoon at Vert Stadium.

With the tie, both teams move to 1-2-1 on the young season.

“This was an exciting college game against an excellent and well-coached Georgia Southern club,” commented Radford head coach Marc Reeves.

Just like two of its previous three contests, Radford put the first mark on the board with a 13th minute strike from junior Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar).

Freshman Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos) threaded a pass through the Eagle defense to Awosika, who banked it off the far post for his second strike of the season and 11th of his career.

Four of Radford's five goals this year have come in the first 14 minutes of the contest, including both of Awosika's.

The Highlanders put pressure on Georgia Southern's defense and keeper Ryan Platt the entire match, forcing him to make a number of difficult saves to keep his club in the contest.

In addition to making an impressive stop on Bernardo Ulmo's (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) free kick from just outside the box, Platt just barely got a finger on long blasts from both Ulmo and Brian Gwanzura (Harare, Zimbabwe / Harare) to keep the one-goal deficit alive.

Those were just a few of many scoring chances Radford had throughout the entire contest.

“I'm proud of our guys. We showed a lot of spirit to keep going and create a lot of opportunities, which was pleasing. We must continue to improve and have quality at key moments to win games, which we have that many shots and great chances to score,” said Reeves.

Awosika finished the game with a career-high nine shots, including seven on frame.

With just over 11 minutes left in regulation, David Leonard evened the match off an assist from Drew Ruggles at the 78:51 mark.

Ryan Taylor (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) finished with five saves for the Highlanders, while Platt was forced to make 13 stops.

Radford will enjoy a five-day break before hosting league-rival Liberty in its home opener Saturday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.
