WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME AT AMERICAN, 1-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Radford women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime setback to American University Friday evening at Reeves Field.

American (1-8-0) netted the game-winner off a quick counter in the 101st minute. The Eagles' Jasmine Mohandesi sent a ball to Carleigh Morba, who turned and headed it to Brooke Sheppard. Sheppard struck the ball to the lower right of the net and American walked away with the victory.

Radford (4-3-0) saw two scoring chances in the closing minutes of regulation. In the 77th minute, Krissia Vasquez struck a ball to the lower left side of the goal, however, the crouching Eagles' keeper Arianna Efstathiou was well positioned to make the stop.

A flick off a header in the 88th minute by freshman Julie Ruh'e from a free kick landed directly in front of the net, consequently forcing the overtime period.

The Eagles held the advantage in shots (19-11) and in corner kicks (5-2).

“I give a lot of credit to American. They showed a lot of heart and determination to get the result they did today,” said head coach Ben Sohrabi. “We have to play better on the road. We had a lot of players that didn't play to their potential, so hopefully we will on Sunday.”

Freshman Rachel Conway took four of Radford's six first-half attempts on goal. American's keeper made a diving save to the left post on the first Conway strike and the ball sailed just wide of the net on the second.

Radford keeper Che' Brown came up big in the first half, keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard with four saves and gathered a total of five in the match.

The Highlanders return home to Cupp Stadium with a 1 p.m. tilt against Longwood on Sunday.
