BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup with Longwood, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
The Lancers' (6-4-0) game-winning tally came in the 62nd minute when Nikki Glisson dribbled into the left side of the box and rifled the ball to the lower right net. Teammate Jessica Varela tacked on an insurance goal for Longwood three minutes later on a cross in the box from Lindsey Ottavio, to make the score 2-0.
The Highlanders' (4-4-0) two best looks in the second frame came from senior
SharDavia Bell in the 66th minute and from freshman
Sahar Aflaki in the 71st. Bell's shot was stopped by Lancers' keeper Marcia Biddle and Aflaki's attempt just missed the inside right post.
Radford held the advantage in shots, 12-10.
“I think Longwood played well and great defense and we didn't take advantage of what they were giving us,” said head coach
Ben Sohrabi. “As a team we have to realize when we have opportunities and make more of them.”
Freshman keeper Che' Brown made four saves for the game, including a diving punch-out to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
Senior
Kathleen Jarvis possessed the best scoring threat for Radford in the first half when there was a bad clearance off a corner kick. The ball came straight to Jarvis, but her one-touch shot sailed just high over the crossbar.
Longwood had a promising first half break from just outside the six-yard box on the nearside, but freshman
Rachel Conway made a slide tackle to prevent the scoring chance.
The Highlanders head back on the road next weekend to begin a season-long four-game road swing when they take on Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m. and Alabama A&M Sept. 27 at 4:00 p.m.
