VIDEO: MEN’S SOCCER EXTENDS STREAK ON ULMO’S PENALTY KICK

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Bernardo Ulmo
's (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) penalty kick in the 85th minute lifted Radford to a 1-0 victory over in-state foe Longwood in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday evening at Cupp Stadium.

Ulmo's second gamewinner of the season was a result of a hard Longwood tackle on fellow freshman Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos).

“This was another solid win against a good competitive Longwood team,” commented first-year Radford coach Marc Reeves, who's team extended their unbeaten streak to three.

Radford (3-2-1), which held a 3-1 advantage in shots in the opening half, had a pair good scoring chances early on from about 10 yards out.

The Lancers' Joel Helmick made a diving save to his left on Grande's attempt, while Ulmo's first shot of the contest sailed high of frame.

In the 49th minute, the Highlanders had another golden opportunity to put the first mark on the board when Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) got free on a breakaway, but his one v. one chance with Longwood's keeper curled just wide.

Awosika, this past week's Big South Player of the Week, had another great chance to put his club in front three minutes later.

“Once again we created some good scoring chances, but didn't finish well. We kept playing and ended up with another good home win.”

Radford finished with a commanding 9-2 margin in shots, while the Lancers held a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Helmick made a game-high three saves in net for Longwood (0-7-1), while Ryan Taylor (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and Joey Dennis (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) split time in net for the Highlanders with Taylor making the only stop.

Radford returns to action Wednesday evening in a 7 p.m. contest at Davidson. Longwood travels to Charlottesville to take on nationally-ranked Virginia, Tuesday.
