MEN’S SOCCER BATTLES TO 1-1 TIE AT DAVIDSON; EXTENDS UNBEATEN STREAK

BOX SCORE

DAVIDSON, N.C. –
Both goals came just minutes apart in the second half as Radford battled Davidson, the South Region's 10th ranked team, to a 1-1 tie in non-conference men's soccer action at Alumni Stadium Wednesday evening.

Less than three minutes after Brian McGue put the Wildcats up 1-0 with his first goal of the season, Radford's Mike Handlin (Opal, Va. / Liberty-Bealeton) responded with a 54th minute equalizer.

Handlin's game-tying strike came when the senior played a corner short to Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar), who gave it right back to Handlin for his second goal in a Highlander uniform.

“Davidson is a highly talented team that is well coached and organized,” said Radford (3-2-2) head coach Marc Reeves. “This was a solid road performance with a little bit of a banged up team. We look forward to getting back to Cupp Stadium for another big conference game this weekend.”

Despite being outshot 8-5 in the opening period, three of the Highlanders' shots were on goal, including a pair of good looks from Handlin and another long range shot from Bernardo Ulmo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent).

With 2:55 left in the first overtime, Davidson's (4-2-3) Mark Millard had a scoring opportunity, but the Highlanders' goalkeeper Joey Dennis (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) turned away the attempt with an impressive diving save to his right.

“We had phenomenal effort from everybody on the field, good energy from our bench and a tremendous save from Joey Dennis in the first overtime,” commented Reeves.

Both keepers finished with five saves.

The Highlanders' had a tremendous chance to put the game away with just under nine minutes remaining in the second extra session. That opportunity came when Handlin played a long free kick into the box to Awosika, who just missed getting a solid foot on the ball and popped it up from about eight-yards out.

Both teams concluded the 11th all-time meeting with six shots on frame.

Radford returns to action Saturday evening when it hosts conference-foe Presbyterian in a 6 p.m. contest at Cupp Stadium. The Wildcats will travel to College of Charleston for a 4 p.m. game Oct. 2.
