ULMO’S GOLDEN GOAL LIFTS MEN’S SOCCER TO 3-2 WIN IN SEASON OPENER

BOX SCORE

Freshman Bernardo Ulmo's (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) 99th minute free kick from just outside the 18-yard box lifted Radford to a 3-2 season-opening overtime victory at Mount St. Mary's in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Marc Reeves era began in impressive fashion as the Highlanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with strikes from Brian Gwanzura (Harare, Zimbabwe / Harare) and Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) in the 6th and 8th minutes, respectively.

"We are pleased with the result but have a great deal to improve on as a group,” said Reeves. “What is pleasing is in a high-emotion game we found a way to win.”

After a foul right outside the top of the penalty box, Ulmo hit his free kick past the Mountaineers' defensive wall on a low line-drive into the right netting at the 98:24 mark.

In addition to the game-winner, Ulmo set up the first goal of the afternoon with a through ball down the center of the field to Gwanzura, who knocked in his fifth career tally at the 5:20 mark.

Following a Mount St. Mary's miscue, Mike Handlin (Opal, Va. / Liberty-Bealeton) dribbled down field and fed Awosika, who finished calmly in the side netting to extend the Radford margin to 2-0.

The Mountaineers cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 31st minute when Will Thomas passed the ball from the left to Eric Detzel, who then tapped the ball to Chris Wheeler for his first goal of the year.

Detzel had a hand in the equalizer when he sent a through ball ahead to Kyle Patrick for his first goal of the year at 48:12.

Both teams had several chances to break the tie in regulation, but it wasn't until Ulmo scored in the extra session that the standstill was broken.

Radford finished with a 14-13 edge in shots and 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Both keepers recorded four saves.

Radford will continue its four-game stretch away home with a 1 p.m. contest at Marshall on Monday.
