Coming off a 3-2 overtime win at Mount St. Mary's in their season opener, the Radford men's soccer team will continue their four-game stretch away from home with a 1 p.m. contest at Marshall Monday afternoon.
After a foul right outside the top of the penalty box, freshman
Bernardo Ulmo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) hit a free kick past the Mountaineers' defensive wall on a low line drive into the right netting at the 98:24 mark.
The
Marc Reeves era began in impressive fashion as the Highlanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with strikes from
Brian Gwanzura (Harare, Zimbabwe / Harare) and
Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) in the 6th and 8th minutes, respectively.
In addition to the game-winner, Ulmo set up the first goal of the afternoon with a through ball down the center of the field to Gwanzura, who knocked in his fifth career tally at the 5:20 mark.
Following a Mount St. Mary's miscue,
Mike Handlin (Opal, Va. / Liberty-Bealeton) dribbled down field and fed Awosika, who finished calmly in the side netting to extend the Radford margin to 2-0.
Marshall enters the ninth all-time meeting with the Highlanders 1-1-0 on the young season after defeating Oakland Friday evening.
Radford leads the series with the Thundering Herd, 4-2-2.
The Highlanders are looking to begin a season 2-0-0 for the first time since the 2005 campaign.
