BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Radford out-shot UNC Asheville by a 12-3 margin, but a Bryan Bartels golden goal led the Bulldogs to a 1-0 overtime win over the Highlanders on Saturday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.
Bartels broke away at midfield in the final minute of the first overtime period and struck from 12 yards out to the nearside post to lift Asheville (2-5-2, 1-1) to its first Big South win.
Moments earlier, the Highlanders (5-4, 1-1) had their own golden goal opportunity, but
Luis Grande's (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos) 15-yard attempt narrowly cleared the crossbar.
The loss was the first for Radford in eight home matches.
“It was a spirited UNC Asheville team and it was a good win for them,” head coach
Marc Reeves said. “I'm hugely disappointed to lose at home, especially when we had so many chances. Our guys still have to compete better at the start of games and have to create better quality chances as opposed to hoping that something comes off.”
Grande had a chance to get Radford on the board in the 30th minute after beating two defenders just inside the penalty box and ripping shot off the crossbar and straight down, but not past the goal line. The Highlanders had six shots in the first half.
In the 70th minute
Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) sent a ball to the top of the 6-yard box for
Dario Redondo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field), who flicked a shot off of his head that was saved by Asheville goalkeeper Lassi Hurskainen.
Hurskainen, who entered the match eighth in the nation in saves per game, had six stops for the Bulldogs.
“We'll have to turn it around quickly for a non-conference game with Longwood and we'll still have plenty of chances to earn points in the league,” Reeves said.
Radford travels to Longwood on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
