RADFORD, Va. – Freshman
Kara Nay (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) found a cross in the first minute and buried her first collegiate goal, which proved to be the game-winner of a 1-0 hard-fought match over UNC Asheville on a cold and rainy Saturday night.
No. 26 Nay's strike ironically came 26 seconds into the match on a cross from
Julie Ruh'e (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) into the box and she finished high net.
“Coach told me before the game that I had better score tonight and no more balls off the post, so I was thrilled to actually get my first goal tonight,” commented Nay.
“It was a tough game tonight. With two Big South games in two days, the second one comes down to grind and heart and we pulled it out in the end,” said head coach
Ben Sohrabi.
With the sixth shutout of the year, the Highlanders improve to 7-3, 2-0 Big South while the Bulldogs fall to 2-9, 1-1 Big South. Radford also tied a Cupp Stadium record with five home shutouts. The only other team to accomplish that was last year's squad.
With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Ferriss Roberts of Asheville blasted a shot off a corner kick towards the near post but
Che' Brown (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) came up with the game-saving stop. Shortly after she intercepted a cross that had potential and also made another save late to preserve her fourth shutout of the year.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs held the advantage in shots, 10-9, and corners, 4-1.
