WOMEN’S SOCCER CONTINUES STREAK, DEFEATS GARDNER-WEBB 1-0

RADFORD, Va.
Radford women's soccer extended its historic shutout streak in league play to five games with a 1-0 defeat of Gardner-Webb Thursday night, courtesy of a Julie Ruh'e (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) strike on a double assist.

Radford has now gone 463:22 without surrendering a goal and with the clean sheet tonight, the Highlanders surpassed the Cupp Stadium record for shutouts in a single season.

12:08 into the match, Radford (10-3, 4-0 BSC) countered a Gardner-Webb (2-6-5, 0-3-2 BSC) corner that sailed across the box.  Krissia Vasquez (Bowie, Md./St. John's Collegiate) collected the ball and found Mary Wiley (Radford, Va./Radford) who turned up field and threaded a long pass to a breaking Ruh'e.  Ruh'e blasted her attempt with a defender on her hip from outside the 18-yard box for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

For Ruh'e, it was her fifth career game-winning goal and is now tied with Wiley for the most among current players.  It was also the second straight game Vasquez and Ruh'e hooked up on a scoring play, but this time it was Vasquez with the assist and Ruh'e with the goal.

“It was a tough Big South game and typical matchup with Gardner-Webb,” commented head coach Ben Sohrabi.  “They played great and we had to be tough to get this win, but we need to finish more opportunities.”

One of those opportunities came off the foot of Kara Nay (Montclair, Va./Forest Park), who nearly gave Radford a 2-0 cushion in the 61st minute, but her shot rang off the crossbar and was cleared.

Senior Lisa Lubke (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) made two saves and picked up her second clean sheet of the season, while her counterpart Erika Lenns of Gardner-Webb made five saves in the loss.

Radford resumes league play when it hosts Winthrop on Homecoming Saturday.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.
