RUTV: PAYNE’S BLAST LEADS MEN’S SOCCER PAST HIGH POINT, 1-0

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. – Anthony Payne's (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) blast from about 40 yards out proved to be the difference as Radford defeated High Point, 1-0, in Big South men's soccer action on Homecoming Saturday at Cupp Stadium.

The Highlanders, who are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 at home improved to 7-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the conference, while the Panthers fall to 4-7-2 and 1-3-1.

After a number of near misses, the Highlanders finally got on the board in the 76th minute when Chel Ho Kim Park (Santander, Spain) headed a pass back to Payne, who ripped a low line drive that deflected of High Point keeper Michael Chesler into the goal.

Radford finished with a 14-11 edge in shots, while the Panthers had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-0.

One of Radford's better chances in the first half came off a Bernardo Ulmo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.

Ulmo also had another scoring opportunity in the 66th minute, but was unable to convert a Matt Janssen (McLean, Va. / McLean) through ball.

Sophomore Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos) was also a major factor for the Highlanders tonight as the 2011 all-freshman selection attempted four shots.

High Point's Chesler led both goalkeepers with three saves, while Dane Wilson (Cincinnati, Ohio / Princeton) stopped two for the Highlanders.

Radford returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Winthrop for a 7 p.m. contest. High Point will host conference-foe Presbyterian on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
