BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford suffered a 1-0 double overtime setback to in-state foe Longwood in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at the Longwood Athletic Complex.
After the Highlanders had the better chances in both the second period and first extra session, the Lancers' Nick Surkamp scored the game-winner off a header in the 106
th minute.
Surkamp's first goal of the season came following a Vinnie Llana free kick from just shy of midfield.
The Highlanders (5-5-0) had a number of scoring opportunities with under 20 minutes to play in regulation.
Shortly after
Luis Grande (Caracas, Venezuela / U.E. Colegio Los Arcos) forced Longwood's Joel Helmick to make a diving save, Radford's
Bernardo Ulmo (Sao Paulo, Brazil / South Kent) tracked down a loose ball off a free kick and ripped a low shot that defender Devin Pierce just got a foot on sending it just high of frame.
Freshman
Ramzi Dridi (Falls Church, Va. / JEB Stuart) also threatened for the Highlanders late in the second half.
Radford's
Iyiola Awosika (London, England / Aylesbury Grammar) and
Matt Janssen (McLean, Va. / McLean) had good looks at difference makers in the waning minutes of the first overtime, but were unable to capitalize.
Both teams finished with 13 shots.
Dane Wilson (Cincinnati, Ohio / Princeton) led both goalkeepers with six saves, while Helmick stopped five for Longwood (6-4-1).
Radford will conclude its brief road trip with a 2 p.m. contest at nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon.
