RADFORD, Va. – Krissia Vasquez (Bowie, Md./St. John's Collegiate) scored the decisive goal in the 12th minute and the Radford defense held strong as women's soccer won its fourth straight with a 1-0 blanking of Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon.
The Maryland connection of Vasquez and
Julie Ruh'e (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) accounted for the game's lone goal. Vasquez booted the game-winner from inside the box past Charleston Southern's keeper Caitlin Cody on a ball from Ruh'e. For Ruh'e, it was her second helper of a winning goal in the last three league matches.
“It was a tough game to win on the road. Krissia stepped up huge for us early and the defense did a good job of riding the lead out,” commented head coach
Ben Sohrabi.
With the fourth consecutive win, Radford (9-3, 4-0 BSC) tied its best conference start since 1999, when that team went 6-0 on the year. It was also the third time in program history a Radford squad has started 4-0 in Big South play.
The backline consisting of
Tyler Drake (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County),
Sydney Golden (Lexington, Ky./Paul L. Dunbar),
Megan Rhodes (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) and
Stephanie Herb (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson Secondary) played a strong game, keeping an aggressive Buccaneer' offense off the board.
Goalkeeper
Che' Brown (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) made a season-high eight saves en route to winning her sixth game of the year and posted yet another clean sheet, her fifth on the season.
Charleston Southern (6-6, 1-3 BSC) held the edge in shots, 17-14 and in corners, 6-2, but couldn't find an equalizer to Vasquez's early goal. Cody finished with seven saves on the afternoon.
