WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS 81-68 DECISION TO DAVIDSON

BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. Two players hit the 20-point plateau, including a career-high 21 points by Ayana Avery (Cleveland, N.C./West Rowan), but Radford women's basketball couldn't overcome a 17-6 second-half run as they fell to Davidson, 81-68, Thursday evening at the Dedmon Center.

After a 44-32 Davidson (7-4) advantage after intermission, Radford (6-5) pulled within six, 50-44, but the Wildcats reeled off a 17-6 spurt and wouldn't look back.

Avery matched her previous career-high with 13 in the first half and finished with a game-high 21 on 8-of-10 shooting and 5-of-6 from behind the arc.  Ashley Buckhannon (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) drained 20 points and went 4-of-9 from long range.  The duo would combine for all nine Radford three-pointers.  Victoria Hamilton (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands/Antilles School) also chipped in with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Davidson, winners of five straight contests, had four players hit the 10-point plateau.  Laura Murray led all Wildcat scorers with 19 points, while Sophia Aleksandravicius and Amanda Ottaway recorded 18 apiece.  Aleksandravicius also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 6 assists.  Jasmine Calin chipped in with 12 to round out the double-figure scorers.

The Highlanders held its only lead in the early going, 5-3, before Davidson would go on a 17-2 run over a 4:41 span to get out in front 34-15.

18 of Radford's 32 first-half points came from behind the arc.  Buckhannon and Avery combined for all six treys and hit three apiece.

The Highlanders will host a New Year's Eve matchup with in-state rival Liberty to begin league play.  Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. and will follow the men's game, as part of a double-header.
