TWO-HIT SHUTOUT KEYS SOFTBALL'S 500TH PROGRAM VICTORY

Senior Chelsea Kelley and freshman Stephanie Dameron combine on two-hit shutout

BOX SCORE

STATESBORO, Ga. – Chelsea Kelley and Stephanie Dameron combined for a two-hit shutout and Radford won its 500th game in program history with a 7-0 win at Georgia Southern in the second game of the Spring Hill Suites Eagle Classic.

Kelley started and went the first three innings. After a leadoff single and a walk, the senior settled down to retire nine straight, which included one strikeout.

Dameron made an impressive collegiate debut as she retired the final 10 batters of the contest after getting into a little bit of trouble to start the fourth. With her performance, the frosh earned the victory.

Behind five hits and aggressive base running, Radford (1-1) scored its seven runs in the first four innings. Five different Highlanders recorded base knocks, which included a two-run blast in the fourth by junior Nichole Beall.

Meredith Moore put Radford on the board with two outs in the first on a RBI single through the left side.

In the bottom half of the first, Kelley got into a bit of jam as runners were on second and third with one out. She gathered herself and retired GSU's fourth and fifth hitters, who combined for three home runs in its first game against Mercer.

The Highlanders added two more two-out runs in the second on a two-run single by Kristen Shifflett.

Radford broke open the game with a four-run fourth, highlighted Beall's long ball to left, a RBI double by senior Taylor Cunningham and a double steal.

Dameron entered in the fourth and got out her only jam. After an error would have loaded the bases, Beall recovered from her miscue and caught the runner venturing to far off of third base. No Eagle runners would reach base the rest of the game.

Brianna Streetmon suffered the defeat for GSU. She allowed all seven runs, five earned, on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Sarah Purvis came in and provided 3.1 frames of no-hit relief. She struck out six and walked one.

Radford closes out play tomorrow, Feb. 13 facing Georgia Southern at 10:00 a.m. and Mercer at 12:30 p.m.
