STATESBORO, Ga. – Radford rallied from a pair of early deficits to edge Georgia Southern, 4-3, Sunday morning from Eagle Field. In game two against Mercer, the Highlanders (2-2) tied the game on a two-out three-run home run by senior
Kristen Shifflett iin the seventh, only to see the Bears (2-1) win the game on back-to-back two-out errors in the bottom half of the inning.
Senior
Taylor Cunningham completed the game one comeback with a RBI double down the leftfield line in the sixth that allowed junior
Hannah Ojeda to scoot home from second with the game-winning run.
Cunningham, Ojeda and senior
Lauren Williams combined for seven of Radford's 10 hits. Williams was a perfect 3-for-3 with a RBI and run scored, while Ojeda and Cunningham each recorded two hits. One of Ojeda's was her first collegiate home run.
Freshman
Stephanie Dameron picked up her second win in as many appearances with three innings of shutout relief. Senior
Chelsea Kelley put in another quality start, going four innings and allowing an earned run on four hits with a strikeout.
"For a young pitcher playing her first collegiate games, Stephanie did a great job staying within herself and sticking the game plan all day and throughout the weekend," said assistant coach Katy Lampman.
Georgia Southern took advantage of a two-out error to score a pair in the bottom of the first. A pop-up to shallow center was over run and the next batter, Mackenzie Williams, took advantage and launched a two-run blast to left.
The Highlanders responded with two runs of their own in the second. Ojeda led the inning off with a high shot down the right field line. An RBI single by Williams plated freshman
Jessie Hutchens, who walked and moved to second on Cunningham's infield single.
Marie Fogle put the Eagles back on top, 3-2, with a leadoff home run in the third.
Williams came around to tie the game in the fourth on
Michelle Beall's two-out single to right. Beall was the fourth Highlander with a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-2 with two walks.
In the sixth, Ojeda led off with a double down the leftfield line and with one out Cunningham snuck one just inside the third base bag for the game-winner.
Sarah Purvis suffered the defeat in six-plus innings of work. She gave up all four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Williams registered two of GSU's six hits.
Down to their last at bat and trailing 3-0 in game two,
Jessica Agee drew a lead off walk and Cunningham earned a base on balls with one out. With two outs, Shifflett launched a three-run blast to centerfield to tie the game at three.
However, with two outs Anna Johnson reached on a fielding error on a grounder to third and she took off on the next pitch. The low throw went into centerfield and was misplayed allowing her to come around and score the winning run.
"We had some bigs hits today, but we weren't consistant as we need to be from start to finish this weekend," stated Lampman.
Dameron suffered the loss despite another solid relief appearance of not hits and three strikeouts. Entering with two-on and two outs in the third, she struck out the first batter to stop Mercer from tacking on more runs.
The only batter to reach base until the seventh was a hit batter with one out in the fourth. Dameron went on to retire 10 straight before the error.
For the weekend, the frosh allowed an unearned run and three hits in 11 innings of relief work. She struck out three and walked a batter in three appearances.
The Bears scored three runs, on in the first and two in the second, courtesy of clutch two-out hitting to grab a 3-0 lead after three. After that, Dameron entered an shut Mercer down the rest of the game.
Kellie Snooks started and lasted 2.2 innings. She gave up three run on six hits with no walks or strikeouts.
