AUBURN, Ala. – Right-hander Derek Varnadore tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Auburn to a 2-0 win over Radford in the series finale between the two teams on Sunday afternoon.
Varnadore (2-0), making his second start for Auburn, struck out 13 Radford hitters and allowed just four base runners, helping the Tigers (5-2) to a 2-1 series win over the Highlanders (3-3).
Radford right-hander
Bobby Bolling took the loss (0-1), but matched Varnadore for 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight while limiting Auburn to two runs on five hits. Bolling ran his strikeout total to 17 in two starts this season (over 10 2/3 innings).
Radford pitching stranded seven Auburn base runners.
"Bolling threw well enough to give us opportunities to win," head coach
Joe Raccuia said. "He kept us in this game, and we also got help from
Brad Wimmer, who got us out of a little bit of a jam in the seventh."
The Tigers got on the board in the first on Casey McElroy's RBI double to the right field corner, scoring Creede Simpson to make it a 1-0 lead. Auburn got two on with no outs in the second, with Cullen Wacker's sacrifice fly to center scoring Kevin Patterson to make it a 2-0 advantage.
Patterson was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
Matt Mack and
Cory Turner each had hits for the Highlanders.
"All in all, it was a really good weekend of baseball," Raccuia said. "Playing like we did this weekend, day in and day out, will give us a opportunity to win a lot of games this year."
Radford continues its 12-game road trip at James Madison on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
