BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Radford ended the Magic City Classic on a high note, defeating co-host Samford, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon from Bulldog Field.
Lauren Williams and
Michelle Beall each recorded three of the Highlanders' (3-6) season-high 11 hits.
Nichole Beall knocked in three runs.
Both Bealls hit long balls, while Williams scored two runs and swiped a pair of Radford's season-high six bags.
Freshman
Stephanie Dameron and senior
Chelsea Kelley combined for the victory. Dameron, an all-tournament selection, started and allowed a run on three hits in the first three innings. Kelley earned the victory as she scattered four hits and struck out four. The duo did not walk a batter.
For the tournament, Dameron (pictured left) posted a 1.47 ERA with six punchouts and zero walks in 14.1 innings. She held opponents to a .212 batting average.
The Highlanders struck in the top of the first on a two-run home run by
Nichole Beall and added a third run on a solo blast by her twin sister Michelle in the second.
The Bulldogs (3-10) tallied their lone run on an RBI groundout after a one-out triple in the third.
Radford added two more in the fifth on a sac fly by
Nichole Beall and a RBI single by
Shannon Keefe.
They closed out the scoring in the sixth on a passed ball.
The Highlanders will embark on a 10-day, 12-game spring break trip to Clearwater, Fla. Radford will play two five-game tournaments hosted by USF sandwiched around a mid-week doubleheader against Toledo. They will open play on Friday, March 4 taking on Central Michigan and Wagner as part of the USF Under Armour Invitational.
