BEALL HOMERS TWICE; HIGHLANDERS SPLIT AT SHOWCASE

LA SALLE BOX | NEBRASKA BOX

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Nichole Beall hit a pair of home runs as Radford split on the first day of the Under Armour Showcase, Friday afternoon from the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The Highlanders (11-7) defeated La Salle, 5-2 to extend their winning streak to nine before falling to No. 16/20 Nebraska, 7-2.

In the first contest, Beall launched a grand slam and Jackie Jenkins provided six strong innings of relief as Radford defeated La Salle, 5-2 in the opening game of the tournament. The win extended the Highlanders' winning streak to nine games, the second longest streak away from home in program history.

With the Highlanders already up 1-0, Beall tattooed a pitch deep over the leftfield fence for her first collegiate granny staking them to a 5-0 advantage.

Jenkins (W, 3-0), who entered one batter into the first, scattered three hits and allowed a run in six-plus frames with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Explorers spoiled the shutout with a two-out two-run bloop single in the bottom of the seventh. After the hit and the tying run at the plate, Dameron induced a grounder back to box to end the La Salle threat.

Michelle Beall was 2-for-3 with a triple and a stolen base.

Nebraska scored six two-out runs in the final two innings to pull away from Radford, 7-2, ending the Highlanders' nine-game winning streak.

Both teams traded runs in the third, which included Beall's solo shot to dead center to tie the game at 1-1.

In what was a pitcher's dual through six innings, Nebraska took the lead (2-1) in the top of the frame on a two-out double by Brooke Thomason.

Then the Cornhusker exploded for five more two-out runs in the top of the seventh. The Huskers loaded the bases with no outs and then after the Highlanders recorded the second out, Taylor Edwards belted a three-run double to break open the game. They would add two more to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Radford tried to rally, loading the bases with two outs and Beall knocking in a run with an infield single, but Ashley Hageman, who entered in the fifth, struck out the final batter to end the threat.

Beall and Lauren Williams recorded two hits apiece for the Highlanders. Williams also stole a base and coupled with two in game one, she has 15 on the season, matching her career-high.

Kelley suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 6.0-plus innings. Hageman earned the win in relief surrendering a run on three hits in three frames of work.

Radford returns to action tomorrow for a pair of contests against UConn and Long Island at 3 and 5:30 p.m.
