BOX SCORE
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Radford scored four runs in the first and held on to defeat Robert Morris, 4-3, in its final game of “spring break” and the USF Under Armour Showcase, Sunday Morning from the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The victory moved the Highlanders to 13-8 as they compiled a 10-2 record during the trip.
Another strong relief stint by
Jackie Jenkins, who picked up her third win of the week, enabled Radford to hold on for the victory.
After the Colonials (7-9) struck for a run on back-to-back hits to start the contest, Jenkins relieved
Stephanie Dameron and did not allow an earned run the rest of the way. She surrendered four hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter in seven innings of work.
Following Robert Morris' run in the top of the first, Radford used aggressive base running and four hits to counter with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame.
Hannah Ojeda led off with a single and immediately stole second and third. After a fielder's choice and another steal put runners on second and third,
Nichole Beall plated the first run with high infield single to shortstop.
A ground out and a bunt single on a squeeze by
Taylor Cunningham added two more.
Meredith Moore capped off the inning and plated Cunningham, who stole RU's fourth bag of the frame and went to third on an error, with a run-scoring single back up the middle.
After four scoreless frames, RMU finally got to Jenkins and made it one-run game with a pair of two-out unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Alli Patton, took advantage of a two-our error and laced a triple to right center scoring Jaci Timko. Patton made it one-run game coming home on Annie Dubovec's RBI single.
Jenkins regrouped and induced a grounder to end the frame. A two-out infield single in the seventh gave RMU life, but a shallow fly ball to center ended the minor threat.
Cunningham was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and stolen base.
The Highlanders turned in another strong defensive performance, turning two more double plays.
The four stolen bases by the Highlanders moves their season total to 56 with 22 of them over the last seven contests.
Lauren Williams led the way with eight and now has a career and team-high 18.
Radford returns home from its lengthy trip to host James Madison on Wednesday, March 16. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
