CHARLESTON SOUTHERN SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER FROM RADFORD BASEBALL

BOX SCORES: GAME 1 | GAME 2

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– Charleston Southern had 23 hits in two games, a walk-off win in game one and a complete game perfomance by righty Jesse Cadenhead in game two on the way to a sweep of Radford, 5-4 (10 innings) and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

With the wins, Charleston Southern is 13-10 overall and 3-3 in the Big South, while the Highlanders are 13-10 and 0-3.

"Charleston Southern deserved all three games," head coach Joe Raccuia said.  "They out-hit us, out-pitched us, we didn't do enough to win with multiple opportunities to win all three games.

"We believe that we were in the right positions to get the wins, but couldn't execute when we needed it.  Sometimes you get what you deserve."

GAME 1: CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 5, RADFORD 4 (10)

Charleston Southern scored a walk-off run on a 10th-inning error with two outs and the Highlanders stranded runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth in the Buccaneers' game one win.

Radford led the game 4-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth inning, before a Nick Chinners single with one out brought home Brandon McKinney, who walked to lead off the inning, making the score 4-4. Charleston Southern loaded the bases before Abram Williams struck out the next two hitters to retire the side.

In the top of the tenth, two walks and an error loaded the bases for the Highlanders before Tyler Vick entered to get the final two batters and leave the bases loaded.

Vick earned his first win of the season (1-0) while Williams suffered his first loss (0-1).

Matt Hillsinger was 3-for-5 with a second inning RBI single that gave Radford a 3-2 lead.

Charleston Southern's Derek Smith went 3-for-5 and Jaren Sustar went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

GAME 2: CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 3, RADFORD 1

Cadenhead went the distance in game two, throwing better than 140 pitches to pick up his third career win over the Highlanders.

The righty struck out nine batters and didn't walk anyone to lift the Buccaneers to the series sweep.

Bobby Bolling pitched effectively for Radford, but picked up the loss (2-2). Bolling went 7 2/3 innings in his start, allowed just two earned runs and fanned four while walking none.

Hillsinger was 2-for-4, stole two bases, and hit his fifth homer of the season with two outs in the fifth to get Radford on the board and make it a 1-0 lead for the Highlanders.

In a 1-1 game in the sixth, Smith hit his sixth homer of the season, a solo blast to left with two outs to make it a 2-1 lead for the Buccaneers. Smith delivered again in the eighth, a two-out single to score Tom Burkett and make it a 3-1 lead.

NOTES: Cory Turner picked up hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 10 games … Radford is back in the New River Valley on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game at Virginia Tech … The Highlanders are scheduled to play their first home night game in program history on Wednesday against Longwood at 6 p.m.
