SOFTBALL SPLITS AT LIBERTY

Game One Box | Game Two Box

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Radford split a Big South doubleheader at Liberty winning game one, 5-4 and falling in game two, 11-2 in five innings.

In game one, the Highlanders (19-11, 1-1 Big South) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off a late rally for the game one win.

Michelle Beall and Taylor Cunningham each went 2-for-3. Beall homered and recorded three RBI, while Cunningham scored two runs.

Jackie Jenkins improved to 8-0 with the victory, while Stephanie Dameron earned the first save.

Radford grabbed its 4-0 lead after three innings with a pair of runs in the second and third frames.

A two-out RBI single by Ryndee Ruch put the Highlanders on the board and an error the ensuing at bat added another run.

Beall doubled the lead in the third with two-run line shot over the leftfield fence.

A two-out, two-run double by Liberty's (10-13, 1-1 Big South) Meredith Crisante in the fourth cut Radford's lead in half. Those were the first runs Jenkins allowed in 24.1 innings and it also ended a 30-inning streak of no earned run.

The Highlanders added an important insurance run with two outs in the fifth. Hannah Ojeda, who opened the frame being hit and stealing second, scored on Beall's single up the middle.

Solo home runs by Ashley Bensinger (6th) and Jill Stephens (7th) put the Lady Flames within a run.

Dameron who entered with one out in the sixth, allowed the leadoff pinch hit home run to Stephens in the seventh and then went 3-0 on the next batter Sammi Shivock.

After a visit from head coach Mickey Dean, she struck out Shivock on three pitches and induced a groundout to short and then caught a soft liner to earn her first collegiate save.

Game two saw the Lady Flames recorded 13 hits, including four home runs to come out with the split.

The Lady Flames scored three unearned runs in the first, two on a two-run single by Kaylee West. They added two more on a two-run long ball by Keely McMillon in the second and another on a solo blast by Amber DePasquale in the third for a 6-1 lead.

These runs came after Radford struck first on a RBI single by Cunningham with two outs in the first.

The Highlanders got a run back in the fourth on an infield single by pinch hitter Meredith Moore. However a groundout on the next pitch ended the threat.

A three-run home run by Kelly Strickland made it 9-2 in the fourth and with two outs a diving catch in the leftcenterfield gap by Lauren Williams saved two more runs.

Ashley Bensinger ended with two outs in the fifth with a long home run to left.

McMillon was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Bensinger, Strickland, West and DePasquale all had two hits for the Lady Flames.

Katrina Johnson earned the win, allowing no earned run on three hits. She struck out two and walked one.

The Highlanders return home on Wednesday, March 30 for a non-conference double header against North Carolina at 3 p.m.
