BOX SCORE
BLACKSBURG, Va. –
Robert Lamas hit a two-run double in the fifth to give Radford the lead,
Matt Hillsinger went 4-for-5, and the Highlanders snapped a three-game slide with a 7-5 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday night.
Radford (14-10) earned its first win over the Hokies (14-13) since April 20, 2004. The win was the first for the Highlanders at English Field since March 9, 2000.
Two-out runs were key for the Highlanders –
Matt Mack singled home a run in the third to give Radford a 2-1 lead, Hillsinger's fourth-inning single scored Lamas, and Lamas gave the Highlanders a 5-3 lead, one they didn't give up, with his double in the fifth.
“We've been swinging the bats well several games in a row, but just the got hits when we needed them tonight,” head coach
Joe Raccuia said. “Two-out hitting was very good.
“
Cassidy McDaniel gave us a solid start and we shortened the game with our relievers, which is what we like to do. If you add it all up, back half of the bullpen was important and we played our style of ball, all things that were good to see. It was a great bounce-back win that should jump start us.”
Lamas went 2-for-4 and got the Highlanders on the board in the top of the second when his ground ball out to short scored
Alex Guerra from third and made it a 1-1 game.
Mack finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and
Jeff Kemp was 1-for-3, scoring twice with two stolen bases.
Brad Wimmer worked two middle relief innings for his second win (2-1) before the Highlanders got 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings from the combined efforts of
Jake Quigg,
Jason Patten and
Abram Williams to close out the game.
Williams earned his sixth save in seven chances.
Virginia Tech matched Radford with 13 hits as all nine batters had a hit, with multi-hit efforts from four players. Andrew Rash was 2-for-4 and hit a fourth inning leadoff homer to bring the Hokies within a run, at 3-2.
Patrick Scoggin took the loss (1-1), unable to escape the fifth after allowing the two-out, two-run double to Lamas.
NOTES: Williams is three saves shy of matching Patten's single-season school record, set in 2009 … The win was the second for the Highlanders against an ACC team and their third against a power conference team in 2011 …
