CLEARWATER, Fla. – Radford Softball extended its winning streak to six games with a 3-1 win over Columbia, Sunday morning on the final day of the Under Armour Invitational hosted by USF.
The Highlanders (8-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Lions (0-5) after two innings and behind a strong pitching performance closed out the three-day tournament undefeated (5-0) for the first time in program history.
Stephanie Dameron and
Jackie Jenkins combined on the four-hitter, while
Hannah Ojeda went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Dameron (4-2) started and went 5.2 innings, allowing a run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Jenkins recorded her second save of the tourney, entering with two outs in the sixth and retiring the final four batters. In three relief outings, the sophomore tossed eight frames of two-hit ball with only four base runners reaching, one via an error, and four strikeouts.
Ojeda took the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the first and deposited over the rightfield fence for a 1-0 lead.
A leadoff error in the second allowed the Highlanders to tack on two more runs, courtesy of a sac fly from
Jessie Hutchens and a two-out RBI single by Ojeda.
That would be all for the offense for Radford as Columbia's Maggie Johnson shut down the Highlanders the rest of the way. She went the distance, surrendering an earned run on four hits with one punch out.
The Lions spoiled the shutout getting back-to-back two-out doubles that chased Dameron from the contest in the sixth.
Radford returns to action for a mid-week doubleheader against Toledo at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
