SOFTBALL FALLS AT VIRGINIA TECH, 4-1

Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Another strong performance from Jasmin Harrell against Radford, led Virginia Tech to a 4-1 victory over the Highlanders (25-14), Wednesday evening from Tech Softball Park.

Harrell went 5.1 innings, allowing a run on four hits, three coming with one out in the sixth. Kenzie Roark came in to shut the door retiring the final five batters for the save, her second against the Highlanders this season.

The Hokies (30-10) scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings, the latter three with two outs. Courtney Liddle recorded two of Virginia Tech's nine hits.

Kristen Froehlich staked the Hokies to an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first.

Liddle dumped a RBI single inside the leftfield line in the third and Ashton Ward stroked at run-scored trip to right centerfield to make it 3-0. Bkaye Smith singled to keep the fourth inning alive and scored on Ward's hit.

Just prior to the fourth-inning hits, Radford turned its school-record 25th double play of the season. Entering the week second in the NCAA in turning two, the Highlanders 5-4-3 twin-killing was their 19th on the ground, increasing that school mark with every turn.

The Highlanders finally got to Harrell for a run in the sixth, but Roark came in and ended the threat. Three straight hard hits, including an RBI single by Nichole Beall pushed the first Highlander run across and chases Harrell from the contest.

Roark went full on the next two batters, but were able to get them to chase for a pair of punchouts ending the frame.

A double by Kristen Shifflett in the sixth extended her hitting streak to seven.

Jackie Jenkins suffered just her second loss (11-2) of the season. She lasted 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk.

Radford returns home on a three-game Big South series against Coastal Carolina this weekend. The team will play two on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. and wrap up on Sunday at 1 p.m.
