KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kristen Shifflett went 2-for-3 and extended her hitting streak to 11 games, but Radford fell 9-1 in five innings to No. 6 Tennessee, Tuesday evening from Lee Stadium.
Shifflett recorded a pair of singles, including the first hit of the game, and also stole a base in the first inning.
The Lady Vols (39-6) recorded 15 hits led by Jessica Spigner's 3-for-3, four RBI performance. Spiger hit a home run and also scored two run. Four other Lady Vols recorded two hits.
The Highlanders (28-15) struck for a run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by
Vicki Madden.
Nichole Beall, who reached on an error to start the frame, scored from second to get Radford on the board.
Tennessee grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second on four consecutive hits to start the frame, the final three RBI singles by Lauren Gibson, Spigner and Melissa Davin.
Radford got out of the inning with two strong defensive plays.
Hannah Ojeda nailed Davin trying to go first to third on a single for the first out. Madden and Shifflett combined on a nice play at third for the second out.
The Lady Vols added two in the fourth on run-scoring singles by Spigner and Madison Shipman. The inning started with a Lauren Gibson triple and scored on a sharp single by Spigner. Davin scored from second on Shipman's base knock to right.
Radford threatened in the fifth putting runners on the corners with one out after singles by Ojeda and Shifflett After a pitching change put Ellen Renfroe in, a failed squeeze attempt got Ojeda caught in a rundown and a foul out ended the threat.
Tennessee ended the contest with four in the fifth.
Ivy Renfroe earned the win as she scattered four hits and struck out five in 4.1 innings. Ellen Renfroe finished out the game with 0.2 innings of shutout ball.
Stephanie Dameron suffered the defeat in three-plus innings of work. Dameron (11-4) allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. She did not walk a batter.
Radford returns home this weekend for a league series against Winthrop. The Highlanders will play two on Friday starting at 2 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 1 p.m. The series finale will be preceded by a ceremony honoring Radford's senior class.
